River and her brother, Dr. Simon Tam, are kidnapped and brought to a low-tech infirmary in a small village. While Simon begrudgingly helps their kidnappers take care of the sick, River quietly sits down with a young girl. The village nurse mentions that the girl is mute and River won't be able to get any conversation out of her.
Later, River speaks to Simon and the nurse, explaining why the girl is mute - her mother went insane and killed her sister, leaving her silent out of trauma. The nurse believes that River was able to get the girl to talk, but River corrects her ("Ruby doesn't talk. Her voice was scared away."), thereby implying that she instead read the girl's memories.
River and Simon are being pursued by a bounty hunter. River manages to sneak off of the ship and onto the bounty hunter's vessel, where she finds a few of his things, including a photo of a woman and a dog. She then explains that the bounty hunter enjoys hurting people and having power; when he was young he "did things" to the pets of the neighborhood, like the dog, and his mother knew he wasn't sane ("sadness in her when she waved good-bye. She's relieved. Saw darkness in you").
